I have been the primary caregiver to my two precious grandkids in the last few weeks of quarantine. I brought them to our place at the beach because Tennessee weather has been bizarre—warm and sunny one day and cold and rainy the next! I needed some Vitamin D, some consistent warm weather, and felt they’d benefit from the time away. I have been HIGHLY entertained! These kiddos crack me up with their vocabulary—the result of so much technological stimulation!

But sometimes they get those new words a little mixed up…

Scarlett: “You forgot to put ‘sunscream’ on my arm!”
Henry: “I’ll eat a hamburger, but all I like is the bun with the ‘patio’ (patty) and ketchup.”

I am amazed by their ability to absorb new words. They use them freely—even if they do confuse them on occasion. Still, it is amazing how much more they seem to know than I did at that age.

I recently read the story in Luke 7 of the Roman officer whose “highly valued slave” was seriously ill. He sent for Christ to come and heal this person but then sent word that Jesus didn’t even have to come. All He had to do was speak the word from wherever He was and the officer was certain the slave would be healed. The words of the LORD that followed really got me:

“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!'” – Luke 7:9

I immediately wrote in my margin, “LORD, does my faith amaze You?”

As I continually learn new things about faith I realize I won’t always get it right. I imagine there are times God’s amazement is coupled with chuckles when I attempt to use my “faith vocabulary.” And maybe a few head shakes as He interprets what I REALLY mean. But I pray He is amazed that I’m trying!

And that maybe I’m using terminology that exceeds my comprehension as I talk it out before, perhaps, I walk it out. I am so thankful for grace! But I also want Him to correct me so I become more articulate as I grow.

One thing I know for certain: if those kiddos don’t use the words when they talk they’ll never broaden their word bank.

What about you? Is God amazed by your faith? Remember, our faith bank will only grow as we use it on a consistent basis. He’ll make sure we are using it properly.

Be kind. Love well.
~ Tonda

P.S. – Have you had a chance to read Surviving Love yet? I value your feedback and would love to know what you think about the book. Leave a review on Amazon or Goodreads. (I promise it’s quick and easy!)
